Life-Long Resident There Died Saturday at Age of 84 Years
Carl Porter, a resident of the Macksburg community most of his life, died Saturday, Feb. 16. He was 84 years of age.
Mr. Porter was born near Macksburg Feb. 2, 1879, a son of Thomas and Rose Grandfield Porter. He was married to Grace Werhan on Oct. 18, 1905, at Muskogee, in the Indian territory of the state of Oklahoma. They were the parents of four children.
Most of his life was spent in farming in Union and Madison counties. Sixteen years ago he retired and moved into Macksburg. He was an active member of the I.O.O.F., receiving a 50-year pin.
Surviving are his wife; two sons, William Porter of Council Bluffs and Edmund Porter of West Des Moines; two daughters, Mrs. Jerome Breakenridge of Orient and Mrs. Beryl Shawler of Des Moines; three brothers, Hal Porter of Muskogee, Okla., Clyde Porter of Tulsa, Okla., and Floyd Porter of Memphis, Tenn.; and three sisters, Mrs. Ona Mo—of Lorimor, Mrs. Addie Thomas of Creston, and Mrs. Grace Werhan of Muskogee. He also leaves 10 grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Monday from the Macksburg Methodist church conducted by the Rev. Don Frank. Burial was made in Moon cemetery.
