Funeral Rites for Former Resident Set Thursday in Winterset
George Sawhill member of a well known Madison county family, died Sunday, Feb. 3 at a hospital in Flint, Mich. He was 63 years of age.
Mr. Sawhill was born in Madison county March 27, 1899, a son of James Wallace and Clara George Sawhill. His early life was spent in this community. He served in the U.S. navy during World War I.
Following the war on Sept. 22, 1920, he was married at Winterset to Alta Marston. They lived in this community until 1928, when they moved to Flint, Mich. During his long residence at Flint, he was employed there by the Chevrolet division of General Motors Inc. until his retirement in 1958.
He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Alta Sawhill of Flint; two daughters, Mrs. Martha M. Everett of Portland, Ore., and Mrs. Doris E. Johannessen of Eugene, Ore.; two sons, Lloyd G. Sawhill of Flint and Eugene W. Sawhill of Sylvania, O.; and four grandchildren. He also leaves two brothers, Gaylord Sawhill of Winterset and Ray Sawhill of California and two sisters, Mrs. Bessie Gillespie of Winterset and Mrs. Bertha Dilts of Colorado Spring, Colo.
Funeral services were held Tuesday in Flint, and local services will be held this Thursday at 1:30 p.m. from the Collins Funeral Home in Winterset, conducted by the Rev. John Fink, pastor of the First United Presbyterian church here. Burial will be made in the Winterset cemetery.
