George Thayer Rites Wednesday

George Brainard Thayer of Des Moines, formerly of Winterset, died Saturday, Aug. 30, at Iowa Lutheran Hospital in Des Moines at the age of 78. Mr. Thayer had served as deputy Madison County treasurer under Mott Saxton for nearly four years.

Born on Nov. 11, 1901, in Waterloo, he was the son of George Brainard and Josephine Griswold Thayer. He lived in Winterset from 1912 until 1918 when his family moved to Lincoln, Neb., and returned to Winterset and was married to Cynthia Alice Harrison on Sept. 4, 1924. His wife survived him. He joined the First United Methodist Church in Winterset in 1913.

Mr. Thayer, who had lived in Des Moines for the past 21 years, was employed by the state as a corporation tax auditor in 1943, served as aquatic director for the Des Moines YMCA in 1956-57 and returned to his position with the state, retiring in 1969 as director of the corporation tax department.

Also surviving are three children, Lois Jane Hunt of Columbus, Ohio, George Brainard Thayer of Altoona and Thomas Nathan Thayer of San Diego, Calif.; 10 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; a brother, Willard Thayer of Denton, Neb.; and two sisters, Bonnie Stoeltzing and Mildred Burd, both of Clinton, Mo.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 3, at Collins Funeral Home with Rev. Phill Hall officiating. Burial was at the Winterset Cemetery.
