Fred Kent Dies at 83

Funeral services for Fred H. Kent were held last Friday at 1:30 at the F. O. Jolly Funeral Home at Sturgis, South Dakota, with Chaplain H. B. Cleveland officiating.

Mr. Kent died suddenly Tuesday, May 2 while visiting at Piedmont. Burial was made with military honors at Black Hills National Cemetery.

A memorial has been established at the cardiac unit of the Sturgis community hospital.

He was born May 13, 1885 at Winterset, to Henry and Mary Kent. He was raised in Iowa and lived there until 1918 when he enlisted in the US Army. Following his discharge he lived in the Mitchell area. He came to Sturgis to work in the C. C. C. camp in 1933.

He was married to Minnie Steffes January 18, 1943 at Belle Fourche. They have lived in Sturgis since then. He had been employed at F. L. Meade until his retirement in 1958. He was a member of the World War I Barracks 3028 and American Legion Post 33 and the 500 Club.

Survivors include his widow, Minnie, of Sturgis; one son, Dennis Kent, Mt. Vernon, South Dakota; two daughters, Mrs. Mark (Marie) Long, Mt. Vernon, and Mrs. Robert (Delores) Campbell, San Leandro, Calif.; two stepchildren, Mrs. Paul (Lulia) Young, Stoneville, and Francis Eveleth, Estherville, Iowa; one brother, William Kent, Winterset, Iowa, 16 grandchildren and 21 great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, and infant sister, and one brother.
