Friends of Mrs. R. E. Coon will be saddened to learn of the death of her father, Mr. S. J. Fahnestock, aged 76 years, on Feb. 22, at the Soldiers' Home at Marshalltown. For the past 27 years he had lived in Des Moines. Frequent visits with his daughter here had gained for him many friends, particularly among the Civil War veterans. He was a post commander of Kinsman Post G. A. R. of Des Moines and had held membership in the Church of Christ since boyhood. Funeral services were held on Tuesday in Des Moines. Mr. and Mrs. Coon were in attendance.

S. J. Fahnestock, veteran of the civil war, was born Oct. 13, 1833, in Perry county, Pa.; was married June 30, 1861, to Eliza A. Martin at Covington, O. He died Feb. 22, 1919.
They moved to Iowa in 1869 and to Des Moines in 1882. Mr. Fahnestock is survived by his wife and five children, Sheridan, Rupert and Mrs. Lulu Stohlgren of Des Moines, Joe of Omaha and Mrs. Berta Coon of Winterset; also a sister Mrs. C. C. Bender of Pennsylvania. He enlisted in April, 1861, and served through the war. He was past commander of Kinsman post, G. A. R. He became a member of the Church of Christ in early manhood and lived a Christian life.
Funeral services will be held at 2 o’clock this afternoon from the Selover and Hamilton funeral parlors.
________________________Transcriber's note: The Fahnestock family lived in Madison County from before 1870 to after 1880 per the Federal censuses. His first name came from his Civil War pension application.
