Services for John Laird

Funeral services were conducted Friday, March 19, 1976, at 1:30 p.m. from the United Methodist Church of St. Charles for John Paul Laird, 82, who died Wednesday, March 17, 1976, at Des Moines General Hospital in Des Moines.

A resident of St. Charles, Mr. Laird was born October 6, 1893, in Oakland, Iowa, the son of John Wesley Wallace Laird and Laura Rayburn Laird. He was educated in the Warren County schools and at Drake University in Des Moines.

A farmer, Mr. Laird was a member of the Model Chapter 174 O.E.S. and Model Lodge 315 A.F. & A.M. of St. Charles and served as manager of the Farmers Shipping Association. He was affiliated with the United Methodist Church of St. Charles.

Surviving Mr. Laird is a sister, Grace Laird of St. Charles. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Rev. Eldon Ringle of St. Charles officiated at the services for Mr. Laird. Burial was made at the St. Charles Cemetery.

Laird Service at St. Charles

John Paul, second child and only son of John Wesley Wallace and Laura Rayburn Laird, was born at Oakland, Iowa, on October 6, 1893, and died at Des Moines General Hospital on March 17, 1976, at the age of 82. Except for two and a half years when as a child he lived in central Missouri, his entire life was spent in Iowa. In 1905 he came with his parents to Warren County and resided in the vicinity of St. Charles from that time on.

He attended Drake University for two years. He taught two years in the rural schools of Warren County, and for a number of years managed a Farmers Cooperative Shipping Association. He also engaged in farming and for several years was an active member of the Warren County Farm Bureau.

He was a member of the St. Charles United Methodist Church in which he had held continuous membership since 1910, of Model Lodge No. 315 A.F. and A.M. of which he was a 50 year member, and of Model Chapter No. 174 Order of the Eastern Star.

He was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his sister, Grace, with whom he had made a home for a number of years.

Funeral services were held at the St. Charles Methodist Church March 19, with the Rev. Eldon Ringle officiating. Burial was in the St. Charles Cemetery.
