A motorcycle-pedestrian accident took the life of an elderly Winterset resident Sunday night, May 26.
According to Winterset Police Chief Albert Lehman, George Fred Morey, 76, was injured when he was struck by a motorcycle while crossing East Jefferson Street here. The accident occurred at 10:00 p.m. Sunday night.
Lehman said the motorcycle was driven by Donald Scott Griswold, 19, of Winterset. Griswold was headed east on Jefferson Street when he collided with Morey just past the intersection of Jefferson and Second Streets. Lehman said Griswold apparently did not see the pedestrian, who was not in a crosswalk.
Morey was taken to Madison County Memorial Hospital in Winterset with broken ribs, lacerations and bruises. He was later transferred to Iowa Methodist Hospital in Des Moines, where he died at about 4:00 a.m. Monday morning, May 27.
No charges were filed, Lehman said. Griswold was not injured, and the motorcycle sustained only slight damage.
George Frederick Morey was born in Illinois on March 30, 1898, the son of Francis and Nina Belle Morey.
He was a retired farmer and road construction worker, and had lived in Madison County for about the last 30 years. He was affiliated with the Christian Church and was a member of the I.O.O.F. Lodge at Macksburg.
Mr. Morey is survived by one brother, Ralph Morey of Minneapolis, Minnesota; and by two sisters: Mrs. Lillian Ross of Graceville, Minnesota; and Mrs. Lela Van Buren of Ortonville, Minnesota. He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother.
Funeral services were held at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, May 29, at the Collins Funeral Home in Winterset, with the Rev. E. E. Jandebeur officiating. Burial was in Moon Cemetery at Macksburg.
