Donald Keith Cumings, Sr., Des Moines

Donald Keith Cumings, Sr., 78, passed from this life on Monday, December 31, 2012, at Bright Kavanagh House in Des Moines. Visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m., Thursday, January 3, 2013, at Iles Funeral Homes - Grandview Park Chapel. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Friday, January 4, 2013, at Staves Memorial United Methodist Church, located at East 28th and Madison in Des Moines, where the family will greet friends for one hour prior to the service time on Friday. Burial will be at Laurel Hill Cemetery in Des Moines, Iowa.

Donald was born on May 31, 1934, in Winterset, Iowa to Lawrence and Florence (Leach) Cumings. Donald attended Altoona High School and served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War.

Donald worked from 1952 to 1983 for Burlington Freight Lines. He was a member of Teamsters 147. He then started Don's Pickup and Delivery, Inc. which later became National Freight Systems, Inc. Don retired in 1996.

He was united in marriage to Joan Kellis on July 28, 1990, in Des Moines.

Donald was a member of Staves Memorial United Methodist Church, Za-Ga-Zig Shrine, Elks Lodge 98, Westgate Adelphic Lodge 509, 33rd Degree Shriner. He enjoyed camping, NASCAR and going to Texas during the winter. 

Donald will be lovingly remembered by his wife, Joan Cumings of Des Moines; two sons, Donald K. Cumings, Jr. of Ankeny, IA, William N. (Angie) Cumings of Norwalk, IA; step-daughter, Debbie McGilvra; four step- sons, Richard (Marcie) Kellis, Mike (Karen) Kellis, Larry Kellis and Dale Kellis; two grandchildren, Tyler (Samantha) Cumings and Kyle Cumings; 18 step- grandchildren; two great-grandchildren, Caleb and Jacie Cumings; 30 step-great-grandchildren; and two brothers, Lawrence (Debbie) Cumings and Robert Cumings.

Donald was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Mayola Guess.
