ROBERTA JONES, WINTERSET

Roberta Mae (Black) Jones, 94, of Winterset, formerly of Council Bluffs, died Friday, Dec. 13, 2012, at West Bridge Care and Rehabilitation in Winterset at the age of 94.

A funeral service was held Sunday, Dec. 16, at United Methodist Church in Greenfield with Pastor Beverlee Bell officiating. Interment is in Greenfield Cemetery.

Roberta Mae was born on Oct. 8, 1918, to Charles Earl and Mabel (Chase) Black at her grandparents’ farm in Madison County, Iowa. She was born on the day her father landed in France in WWI. It was two months before he learned of her birth and nine months before he came home. Roberta attended country school in Madison County for her elementary education. She attended one year of high school in Winterset, one year in Dexter. In 1934 the family moved to Greenfield, Iowa, where Roberta completed high school and graduated with the class of 1936. Roberta held a teacher’s certificate and taught one year in a country school. Roberta and Lloyd Jones were married on Nov. 30, 1940, in Council Bluffs, Iowa. Roberta and Lloyd lived in Greenfield for two years, and in 1942 moved to Council Bluffs. Roberta moved to Winterset, in 2010. Roberta worked at Howard Manufacturing Company during WWII, making holders for transistor radios. She was employed for 32 years at Broadway and Carriage Dry Cleaners in Council Bluffs, retiring in 1990. Roberta was baptized at Pitzer United Presbyterian Church in 1932; she was a member of the Greenfield Methodist Church, Broadway United Methodist Church of Council Bluffs and United Methodist Church of Winterset. She was a member of United Methodist Women for over 70 years.

She was preceded in death by her parents, step-mother, Elizabeth Black; her husband Lloyd in 1983; brother, Earl Chase Black, in 1924 and sister, Eva Rachel Foster, in 1996.

She is survived by a sister, Iola Lovely of Greenfield, nieces: Marilyn Jensen of Fontanelle, Susan Henry of Winterset, Donna Riley of Florida and Norma Pullen of Indianola; nephews: Larry Strong of Waukee, Jack McBride of Arizona, Ted Haines of Council Bluffs; and an aunt, Helen Crawford of Winterset.
