Six in Car Survive But-----

One Youth Killed in Crash

Leon A. Walker, 19, of Winterset, was killed Sunday morning in a highway accident two and a half miles south of Winterset on Highway 169.

Walker was a passenger in the car, driven by Steve Allen, 17, of Winterset. The car contained seven young men when it went out of control and rolled several times into a deep ravine bordering the highway. Several of the others were seriously injured.

The accident occurred about 4:15 a.m. Sunday as the young men were returning to Winterset from Peru. The car went out of control on curving road at that point.

This is the second highway fatality of 1968 in Madison county, and occurred just nine days, after the death of Arnold Leigh of Carroll, who was killed here July 12. Prior to that, this county had more than seven months of 1968 free of death on the highway.

This was the second time in less than three years for this type of tragedy to strike the family of Leon Walker’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. Alex Walker of Winterset. His brother, Richard Walker, was killed Nov. 16, 1965, in a highway crash north of Winterset on Highway 169.
