Page 6Mrs. Fred Ray of Winterset Dies
Was Well-Known Resident of County Nearly All of Life-Time
Mrs. Fred Ray of Winterset, a Madison county resident most of her life, died Thursday, May 4, at Memorial hospital here. She was 78 years of age.
Mrs. Ray was the former Nellie Lucretia Gray, better known as “Crete”. She was a daughter of Charles and Harriet Rhyno Gray, and was born April 22, 1889, near Peru.
Except for two years in California, her life-time was spent in Madison county. She taught school here for 10 years, and had clerked in the Shaw, Ingram and White stores in Winterset. She served many years as a music teacher.
She was married at St. Charles June 26, 1911, to Frank M. Ray. His death occurred in 1922. On Sept. 29, 1928, she was married to Fred J. Ray, who survives her.
Mrs. Ray was a former member of the Rebekah lodge, and of the American Legion auxiliary, in which she served as unite and county president. She was a member of the Elm Grove Methodist church.
In addition to her husband, she leaves five brothers and sisters, Mrs. Harry H. Smith of Winterset, Fred O. Gray of Rockport, Tex., Mrs. Arthur Herzog of Melbourne, E. Ruth Gray of Marshalltown, and Harry L. Gray of St. Charles.
Funeral services were held from the Collins Funeral home here Saturday, conducted by the Rev. Everett K. Burham, pastor of the First Methodist church of Winterset. Burial was made in the Winterset cemetery.
