Lewis S. Smith Dies at 87 Years

Native of Kansas, Had Lived Many Years In Oklahoma Also

Lewis S. Smith of Grand River township died Thursday, April 21, at Memorial hospital in Winterset. He was 87 years of age.

Mr. Smith was born Oct. 25, 1878, in Phillips county, Kansas, a son of James and Isabelle Doty Smith. He was 3 years old when he came with his parents to town. He lived here until 1904 when he moved to Oklahoma, and homesteaded 160 acres there. In 1909 he became a rural mail carrier at Florence, Okla. He moved back to Iowa in 1949.

He was married in 1910 in Grant County, Oklahoma, to Ruby V. Elkins, who survives him. They were parents of 14 children, three of whom preceded him in death.

Surviving in addition to his wife are 11 children: Mrs. Everett Stanley of Maize, Kan., Mrs. Lee LaBrue of Byron, Okla., Mrs. Herman Smith of Jet, Okla., Mrs. Emil Sidlo of Lafayette, Colo., Mrs. Alvin Rose of Clinton, Okla., Forest Smith of Enid, Okla., Omer J. Smith of Maize, Kan., Millard P. Smith of Springfield, Ore., Garnold Smith of Hampton, Va., Gail Smith of Winterset, and Floyd Smith of Lorimor.

He also leaves 45 grandchildren, 37 great grandchildren and a brother, Jay Smith of Lorimor.

Funeral services were held from the Watts and Soll Funeral home in Lorimor, conducted by the Rev. Donald F----. Burial was made in Moon cemetery at Macksburg.
