LEONE “BILL” ESTELLA MAE WELLS

Leone Estella Mae Wells was born the daughter of Charles and Addie King Coulter in Dexter, Iowa on October 31, 1907. Leone’s father had hoped for a son so he caller her “Bill”, and that name has stayed with her throughout her life.

Bill became ill on January 23, 1996, and was admitted to the Madison County Memorial Hospital in Winterset where she died of congestive heart failure on January 24, 1996.

Bill attended the Dexter schools and was expelled for a short period of time for wearing “knickers” to school. Following graduation Bill attended beauty school in Des Moines, Iowa. Bill operated her own beauty salon in Dexter until her marriage to Gerald Wells on October 30, 1927. This union was blessed 5 children: Robert, Virginia, Richard, Paul and Connie.

Bill traveled to Europe and to Hawaii on vacations as well as to local family and friends. She was especially fond of table games such as Scrabble, crossword puzzles, all types of card games with her favorite game being bridge. She played all these games on a regular basis with friends, grandchildren, and was in a bridge club for many years. Bill liked to garden and used to can many of her garden vegetables and used them in her kitchen as she loved to cook. Bill was also involved in politics by volunteering as an election official at the polls, attending caucuses, and keeping abreast of the elections. But of her loves, Bill placed Dexter, Iowa at the top of her list.

Bill leaves the following family to celebrate her life: Son Robert Wells of Dexter, Virginia Bond of Earlham, Richard Wells of Dexter, Paul Wells of Pinellas Park, Florida, and Connie Webber of Dayton, Ohio, 18 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren. Bill was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Gerald, sister Eathel Fortin, sister Pauline Love, and grandson “Dicky” Wells.

Services were held Sunday, January 28, 1996, at 1:30 p.m. at the United Methodist Church in Dexter. Private Interment of Cremains at the Dexter Cemetery.
