Robert C. Herren, 94, of Creston, died Monday, Oct. 22, 2012, at the Greater Regional Hospice Home in Creston.
Funeral services were held Saturday, Oct. 27, at the Powers Funeral Home in Creston with Pastor Ben Carter-Allen officiating. Burial was in the Graceland Cemetery, south of Creston. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Greater Regional Hospice Home.
Robert Charles Herren, son of Flossie Irene (Gillogly) Herren and Charles E. Herren was born May 12, 1918, in Macksburg. Bob graduated from the Macksburg High School in 1937. After school, Bob moved to Miami, Fla., and worked on the docks for Riverside Clean Up, until moving back to Iowa. In 1940, Bob began working for the railroad on the Council Bluffs and Quincy line as a switchman. On Feb. 17, 1945, Bob married Mary Ellen Quinn in Corning, Iowa. He farmed near Macksburg and worked the railroad most of his life. Bob continued to work for the Burlington Northern Santé Fe Railroad, as a switchman and later a brakeman. Bob was a member of the B.P.O. Elks Lodge #605 and the F.O.E. Eagles Lodge #1398, both of Creston, the United Transportation Union and National Association of Retired and Veteran Railway Employees.
Bob was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Mary in 2006, a sister Daisy Dell King and a nephew Charles William “Bill” King.
Bob is survived by his three nieces, Mary Jo Lowry of Urbandale, Donna Standley of Council Bluffs and Betty Abel of Creston; four nephews, John King of Creston, George King of Treynor, Gene Kralik of Creston and Rich Quinn of Creston; great-niece, Debby Goble of Afton; a cousin, Esther Drake of Winterset; special friend, Charlie Taylor of Creston, and many other family and friends.
