Paul A. Rambow

April 11, 1917 - August 17, 2012

Birth and death dates are merely the bookends of life. The books, chapters, pages and paragraphs in between make up the content of Paul Arthur Rambow.

Like most, he was molded by family, shaped by major events of his time, and tempered by war. Though a little short on formal education, he was long on intelligence, experience and energy. He loved to read, absorbing everything with a speed that was phenomenal.

He was the eldest child of Herbert E. and Pearl (Brooks) Rambow of Cherryvale, Kansas. The family moved to Cherokee, Iowa, when Paul was 16. He left school in his senior year, joining the U.S. 14th Cavalry in Ft. Des Moines, and trained as cook and baker at Ft. Riley.

He and Dorothy Maye Sankey married in Osceola, Iowa, on May 4, 1941, and they were soon living in Lockport, Ill., where he was employed by The Texas Co. oil refinery.

Although he could have maintained his “exempt” status, he joined the army in March 1943, first with a Tank Destroyer Unit which disbanded, then as a Sgt. in the 17th Airborne Division. He was assigned to 513th Parachute Infantry Regiment, participating in several campaigns, the last as part of the 1st Allied Airborne crossing of the Rhine River with British and Canadian troops. He was awarded the Purple Heart and two Bronze Star medals, among others. He returned home Dec. 27, 1945, to work as a refinery operator.

Paul’s green thumb probably sprouted in his father’s greenhouse, but his agricultural interests led him into farming near Monse, Ill.

In 1956 he went to Ras Tanura, Saudi Arabia, to train the Saudis at American Arabian Oil Co.

The family returned to the states in December 1959 and took up residence on a farm near Pammel Park. Paul also worked as a baker for Goods Bakery and “parts” man for Morrissey Motors and Bussanmas Inc, but it was on the family farm where he “stayed put” for 52 years.

He is survived by his wife, Dorothy; three sons, Paul of Libertyville, Ill., Phillip (Jan) of Overland Park, Kan., and Gordon of Winterset; three grandchildren, Amy Larsen of Wisconsin, Adam of Minnesota and Megan Sims of West Virginia; three great-grandchildren; his brother, George of Elkhart, Ind.; and his sister, Iva Jean Marzano of Clark Lake, Mich.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, a sister, and a daughter-in-law.

Graveside services are pending.
