JOHN W. CRUMBAKER

John W. Crumbaker was born at Coshocton, O., Dec. 30, 1844, and died at Waverly, Ia., Nov. 30, 1920, his age being 75 years and 11 months. At the age of 17 he moved to McLean county, Illinois, where he lived until he was 29, moving then to Madison county, Iowa, where he resided until 1912, when he moved to Lorimor, Ia.

In 1877, on March 14, he was united in marriage to Agnes Walker. To the union were born two daughters, Mrs. Will Cochran of Lorimor and Mrs. J. L. Daniels of Waverly, who together with the wife, survive. He leaves besides these, three brothers, Andrew of Colfax, Ill., Oliver of Lexington, Ill., and Perry of Canton, O., and one sister, Mrs. Mary Hawthorne, of Colfax, Ill. Preceding him in death were one sister, Mariah, and three brothers, Richard, Harvey and James, besides his father and mother.

Mr. Crumbaker united with the Methodist church in Des Moines in 1888, to which institution he gave his best in thought, service and substance. He was a Christian and not only in creed but in conscience, not only in precept but in practice, and he lived as he thought his Master would have him live, and was willing to have the Master's application made to his life “by their fruits ye shall know them.” Mr. Crumbaker's wide circle of friends, the absence of enemies and his reputation as a true, upright, clean, Christian gentleman, is a monument more excellent than granite and an obituary more excellent than words. He knew his Bible and his Master, and faced eternity with a sense of security that comes from living a clean life and a life close to God. Of John Crumbaker it can truly be said, “A good man has gone.”

He was laid to rest in the Lorimor cemetery on Saturday Dec. 4, from the Methodist church, Rev. Carl Brown, his pastor, officiating.
