Death of MRS. J. F. TRAVIS

Mrs Lydia Ellen Travis died at her home near Peru on Jan. 8, after a short illness. Mrs. Travis left a four weeks old babe, also another daughter and three sons, to mourn their mother's death.

She was a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Aaron Wright, living near Earlham in her infancy, later in Des Moines, until her marriage in 1901. She graduated from North High in the latter place in 1897, when but 17 years old.

A large family of relatives survive her. She was an earnest member of the Presbyterian church, until her removal to Peru when she affiliated with the Methodist church of that place.

On Monday Jan. 5 Rev. J. Owen Smith conducted the funeral services at the church where she was a member, the remains being buried in the Peru cemetery.

To the motherless children and the bereaved husband will be offered the sympathy of a host of friends who knew Mrs. Travis and her life of usefulness.

MORTUARY - MRS. J. F. TRAVIS

Lydia Ellen Travis, daughter of Aaron and Sarah E. Wright, was born Feb. 4, 1880 in Dallas county, north of Earlham and lived in that community until the age of five years, at which time the family moved to Des Moines. At the age of nine years great responsibility was placed upon her and an older sister on account of the death of the mother, thus leaving the care of a family to them. Overcoming this handicap, she continued her school and graduated from North High school at the age of 17.

She resided in Des Moines until May 1, 1901, when she was married to J. F. Travis and moved to Peru, living in that vicinity until the date of her death, Jan. 3, 1920. To this union five children were born: Emery L., Goldie Ellen, Alva Raymond, John Martin and Eva Pearl, age 4 weeks.

In addition to the husband and children she leaves the following to mourn their loss: Her father, who now resides at DeWitt, Ark.; three sisters – Mrs. J. W. Thompson, Spokane, Wash.; Mrs. Robert Woodrell, Turley, Okla.; Mrs. John Perry, West Plains, Mo.; three brothers – Alva L. Wright, Earlham; John N. Wright, Des Moines; Emery L. Wright, DeWitt, Ark. Also four half brothers and a half sister all living with the father in Arkansas, besides many other relatives and a host of friends.

In her early girlhood she united with the Sixth Presbyterian church, later transferring membership to the Westminster Presbyterian church. After her marriage she united with the m. E. church of Peru and is still a member.

Her love for her family and loyalty to friends was extraordinary, always ready and willing to sacrifice in their behalf.

A lifelong friend of the deceased, Mrs. Minnie Hamlin Bishop of Des Moines, was present at the funeral.

Funeral services were conducted at the M. E. church by Rev. J. Owen Smith at 1 o'clock Jan. 5th, after which the body was laid to rest in the Peru cemetery.
