Mrs. Sarah Spurgin, who lived her entire life in Madison county, died at the home of her son, Charles, on Tuesday morning. Since an attack of gallstones, which came on Christmas night, just after her arrival at her son's home for a visit, she failed rapidly.
Mrs. Spurgin, a daughter of Ransom Bishop was born near Peru. In 1884 her husband, J. J. Spurgin, brought his family to Winterset to reside. Here their three children, Charles, Joseph Jr. and Lillian, attended the public schools, the latter becoming a very successful teacher here in after years.
Mr. Spurgin was an active business man of this city for 20 years and at the time of his death, in 1909, he was engaged in farming his land near Winterset.
Mrs. Spurgin was one of eight children of whom three outlive her; Mrs. James Pindell of Afton, Martin Bishop of Fullerton, Nebr., and Lemuel Bishop of Clarinda, Iowa. All are in attendance at the funeral services held today in the Baptist church. One son, Joseph, of Eugene Ore., is not here.
Rev. Jackson Giddens had charge of the funeral services.
Mrs. Spurgin had a wide acquaintance and her loss will be keenly felt by many. To her children will go the sympathy of a host of friends.

Mrs. John Spurgin Dies at Home of Her Son. Lived 66 Years in Madison County.
Mrs. John Spurgin, a lifetime resident of Madison county and Winterset, died at the home of her son, Charles Spurgin, near Peru Tuesday morning. The funeral will be held at the Baptist church Thursday afternoon at 2:30, Rev. Giddens, pastor of the Methodist church, of which she was a member, officiating.
Mrs. Spurgin was born in Madison county. She was a Bishop, her father being one of the settlers who came to the county in 1846. She was married to John Spurgin when quite a young woman and lived in the south part of the county for many years, moving to Winterset in the eighties when Mr. Spurgin entered the meat business. He died eleven years ago.
Four children were born to them, three of them, Charles, Joseph and Mrs. Fred Tidrick, surviving her.
Mrs. Spurgin was sixty-six years old when she died. She had a wide acquaintance in the county, and her estimate qualities and quiet Christian life endeared her to them. Her death caused profound sorrow in the entire community.

Sarah Caroline Bishop was born May 27, 1853, and died at the home of her son, Chas. Spurgin, January 6, 1920, just eleven years and two days after the death of her husband. She was born in Madison county near Peru and here grew too young womanhood.
On December 25, 1872, she was married to John Spurgin. To this union were born four children, Mrs. Fred M. Tidrick, of Des Moines; Charles E. Near Peru; J. M. of Eugene, Oregon; and Edith who died in infancy. She is also survived by one sister, Mrs. James Pindell of Afton, Iowa, and two brothers, Lemuel Bishop, of Clarinda, Iowa, and Martin T. Bishop of Fullerton, Nebraska.
Early in life she made a religious profession and when sixteen years of age joined the Methodist church to which she has been faithful all through her life. She loved the Bible and to attend the services of the church.
The funeral services were conducted from the Baptist church by Rev. Jackson Giddens, her pastor, assisted by Rev. Rogers, pastor of the church, and the mortal remains were laid to rest in the City cemetery.
