Porterfield Scott was born in Metcalf county, Kentucky, June 8, 1853 and died at his home two and one-half miles northeast of Truro, Dec. 19, 1908, aged 55 years, 6 months and 11 days. In 1863 he with his parents made the journey from Kentucky to Iowa by teams and wagons, although but ten years of age at that time he could relate many interesting stories of the preparations for war which were being made by the south at that time.

He lived with his parents in Madison county until his marriage with Miss Margaret Viney, Sept. 3, 1876. To this union were born seven children, three girls and four boys, all of whom survive their parents. In the spring of 1887 he moved with his family to Saline county, Nebraska, where he resided until the death of his wife, Oct. 1, 1900, after which he returned to Madison county, Iowa. On Aug 8, 1906, he was united in marriage to Miss Lydia Anderson.

He was a deep quiet nature and a kind disposition. While not a member of any church, he had a strong faith and unbounded belief in God, and many testimonies along this line are left to comfort the sorrowing ones. For almost a year he had been a constant sufferer, but no word of complaint ever escaped his lips. While never being confined to bed, he was able almost daily to sit for a short time on the porch and always enjoyed the greetings of the passerby.

The funeral was held from the Baptist church on Monday at 11 o'clock conducted by Rev. Hughes after which the remains were interred in the Hartman cemetery.
