Page 1Death of MRS. B. B. BURTON
Death came to Mrs. Mary Burton on Saturday morning, following years of delicate health. She had been very frail since an operation several months ago, but for a time the chances for her recovery were hopeful. Rev. Burton had resigned his pastoral work here to take effect July first, planning to go elsewhere to aid in the restoration of health.
Many friends called on Sunday at the home to view the remains, the W.C.T.U. - - and Rebekahs going as an organization to honor her memory. On Monday morning at half past eight, a brief service was held in the Burton home, with Rev. Stewart, Rev. Mann, Rev. Countermine and Rev. Giddens participating. The remains were taken to Des Moines where services were held at three o'clock in the University Place Church of Christ, followed by burial in Des Moines.
It is a genuine sorrow to this community to lose so lovely a character as Mrs. Burton. During three years of residence here, she endeared herself, not only to her associates in her own church, but to all who knew her. Her sweetness, her gracious manner, her tact and charm, were winning in themselves alone. Besides these qualities, she possessed a mentality of a high order, combined with a modesty that caused her to exhibit surprise whenever her abilities were remarked or admired. A spiritual endowment fitted her for her labor as helpmeet to her husband, and as a mother, she was deeply devoted to her son, John and daughter, Miss Hazel. Her death has left a real vacancy in many hearts and her beautiful life will be a lasting memorial to those who knew her.
