WILLIAM F. MATTHEWS

William Franklin Matthews, the third child of Mr. and Mrs. L. A. Matthews, was born in Madison county, Iowa, Aug. 24,1896, and was called away to the new life, June 20, 1918, being aged 21 years, 9 months and 27 days.

Four years ago, under the preaching of Chas. D. Priest, he accepted Christ as his savior, and was baptized on Nov. 16, 1914. Becoming of draft age on June 5th of this year he was registered and would have willingly gone to the service of his country, but he was asked to respond to a higher call and to heed the voice of another commander, to which he willingly responded. Throughout his entire illness, he always manifested the spirit of patience and resignation. He never complained. He was thoughtful of others and forgetful of himself. He was dutiful and mindful of his parents in his home. He was faithful in his attendance in the house of God. He loved the Bible school and was a loyal member of the young men's class; and in the home and in the church, and in the school, he will be missed but in the new life he will be blessed. His last words were a request “that they all would follow him home.”

He leaves to mourn his loss, his parents, six sisters, one sister in law and two brothers, besides a large number of relatives and friends. He was laid to rest in the Norwalk cemetery, near his home.
