News of Interest from St. Charles

As Fred Elston was returning from work last Wednesday evening, his car crashed into a truck loaded with corn on No. 169 south of Winterset. He was taken to the hospital in Winterset where it was found he had five fractures in his skull. It was thought at first he might recover, but after several hours of intense suffering, he passed away Friday forenoon. He had worked as rural maintainer on the county roads for the past seven years.

He is survived by his wife, formerly Miss Alice Archer and an adopted son, Forrest Dale, seven years old, also his father and mother, Mr. and Mrs. Lon Elston of near Indianola, four sisters and two brothers and many friends.

Funeral services were held at the Christian church Sunday afternoon conducted by Rev. Rector. A large number of county officers and business men of Winterset were in attendance. The six pall bearers were fellow workers of the county. A quartette furnished the music and he was laid to rest in the St. Charles cemetery. Relatives from a distance were Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Archer of Ackley, Minnesota and Mr. and Mrs. Marvin Archer and children of Missouri.

FRED ELLSON DIES – FATALLY INJURED

In Accident on No.169 South - County Road Worker Last Seven Years

Fred Ellson, 35, St. Charles, who was seriously injured in a truck-car crash on No. 169 south Wednesday night, December 11, died Friday morning in the Winterset Hospital.Five skull fractures and other head injuries were sustained and twenty-four stitches were required to close the wound. He regained partial consciousness only the day following the accident.

Ellson had been employed as a county road maintainer and Scott township and was on his way home when the accident occurred about ten p.m. It is believed that he may have fallen asleep when his car, a Chevrolet coach, collided with a truck loaded with corn driven by Frank Popejoy of Springfield, Missouri. The truck went onto the shoulder of the highway and was badly damaged. The car was wrecked. Neither Popejoy nor Lindell Dishman who was riding with him were injured.

Mr. Ellson was born near Indianola December 3, 1902. He became a member of the Church of Christ at Norwalk when he was twelve. His marriage to Miss Alice Archer of St. Charles took place, September 13, 1922. With the exception of a year spent in Des Moines, Mr. and Mrs. Ellson had made their home near St. Charles.

Surviving are his wife, a son Forest Dale, his parents, four sisters, Mrs. Allie Delong of St. Charles; Mrs. Bertha Drotz of Des Moines; Mrs. Alice Warren, Long Beach, California; Mrs. Gladys Akers, Carlisle; two brothers, Robert and Harold Ellson of Des Moines.

Services were held at the St. Charles Church of Christ Sunday afternoon at two o’clock conducted by the Rev. Rector of Truro. Burial was in the St. Charles cemetery. Pallbearers were Hale Sloan, Everett Jeffs, E. G. Husted, A. A. Faust, Milo Moore and Ralph Baker, co-workers with Ellson as maintainers of Madison highways.
