News of Interest from St. Charles

Mrs. Laura Sayre received a letter on Friday telling of the death of her sister, Mrs. Abagail Guernsey at Beverly Hills, California. Mrs. Guernsey was 93 years of age and for several years had been the only surviving member of the 42 club which was organized here many years ago having a membership of fourteen, three women and eleven men, all of whom were born in 1842. For several years Mrs. Guernsey had resided in Texas, only going to California a few months ago.

Her body will be placed in a receiving vault at Beverly Hills for the present and later on will be brought here for burial in the St. Charles cemetery beside her husband and children.

News of Interest from St. Charles

The body of Mrs. Abigail McLaughlin Guernsey arrived from Beverly Hills, California, Friday evening and burial was made in the family lot, in the St. Charles cemetery, Saturday morning at 10:30, following a short service at the grave.

She was 93 years of age and is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Blanche Duncan of Mercedes, Texas, and one sister, Mrs. Laura Sayre of this place. Mr. Guernsey preceded her in death in 1901.

Relatives from a distance who came for the service were Mr. and Mrs. Will Buchanan, Mr. and Mrs. Ed Wilson, Mr. and Mrs. Herbert Bohner and Mrs. Nydia McVey and children all of Des Moines.

Mrs. Blanche Duncan from Texas, and Beverly Hills, California, is in St. Charles making arrangements for the burial of her mother, Mrs Abigail Guernsey, who died last December in California. Her body has been in a receiving vault and will be shipped to St. Cahrles this week. Burial services will be held in the cemetery next Saturday morning at 10:30.

Mr. and Mrs. Guernsey came to South township soon after the Civil war, coming from Wisconsin, and settled on a farm southwest of St. Charles still known as the “Guernsey Farm”. The family moved to Des Moines where he died several years ago and lies in the St. Charles cemetery.

Mrs. Guernsey made her home with her daughter in Texas, but made many visits to St. Charles so is well known by the older residents. She was the last survivor of the 42 club of St. Charles which at one time had more than a dozen members. She was in her 94th year at the time of her death.

Mrs. Lura Sayre is a sister, and the last surviving member of the H. A. McLaughlin family which came to this county in 1865.
