ELEANOR M. SLAVENS

Eleanor M. Slavens was born the daughter of Leonard and Flossie (Cleverley) Pearce in Marshalltown, Iowa on October 9, 1928. She died at the Community Care Center in Stuart on December 12, 2011 at the age of 83 years, 2 months and 3 days.

Eleanor graduated from Maxwell, Iowa High School. She then attended the Iowa Teachers College in Cedar Falls and completed her education with a Bachelor's Degree from Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa. Eleanor taught 3rd and 4th grade elementary school in Earlham for over 30 years.

Eleanor and Robert Slavens were married on May 21, 1950 in Earlham, Iowa. This union was blessed with two sons: Jay and Larry.

Eleanor and Robert were involved with the Masonic Lodge and Eleanor was a member of the Eastern Star for many years. She was also a member of the Earlham Chautauqua Circle. She enjoyed sewing and quilting, often giving her quilts to family and friends. She was an avid reader and enjoyed any and all topics. Eleanor loved to feed her birds and watch them visit her feeder. She also had a butterfly garden which she enjoyed while working on her flower beds. Spending time with family was always her favorite pastime.

Eleanor leaves the following to celebrate her life: son Jay Slavens and wife Terri of Des Moines, IA; son Larry Slavens of Urbandale, IA; sister Alice Louise Hand and husband Howard of Maxwell, IA.

Eleanor was preceded in death by her parents Leonard and Flossie Pearce; husband Robert Slavens; brother Leonard James Pearce and sister Marjorie Tabor.

Eleanor M. Slavens, Earlham

Eleanor M. Slavens, age 83, of Earlham, died at Community Care Center in Stuart on Monday December 12, 2011. Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday December 16, 2011 at the Kuhn Funeral Home in Earlham with burial in the Earlham Cemetery. Visitation will be Thursday December 15, 2011 at the Kuhn Funeral Home from 3 to 8 p.m., where the family will greet friends from 6 to 8 p.m.

Eleanor was a teacher at the Earlham School for 30 plus years.

She is survived by her sons: Jay Slavens and wife Terri of Des Moines; son Larry Slavens of Urbandale and a sister Louise Hand and husband Howard of Maxwell. Memorials may be directed to the Earlham Fire and Rescue of the American Heart Association .
