Rev. J. R. Murphy Passes Away

From Saturday's Capital we take the following item:

"Death claimed the Rev. John R. Murphy at his home at 1222 Seventh street this morning at 7:30 o'clock after a long illness. Mr. Murphy was eighty-nine years old and his extreme age contributed to the cause of death.

Deceased was born in Pennsylvania and came to Des Moines many years ago and in the early days was in charge of one of the Baptist churches here. He is survived by his wife and two children."

The funeral services were held from the First Baptist church, Des Moines, Monday afternoon.

Dr. Murphy was well known here. He was for several years a resident of this county (Madison) and at one time pastor of the Baptist church at this place. He was a brother-in-law to Judge Fred Mott and father of John C. Murphy, chief mail clerk at Des Moines. He was one of the grand men of the Baptist church, beloved by all who knew him and his life was filled with good works and kind deeds.
