Services Monday for Thomas Belford

Requiem Mass for Thomas Belford, was celebrated in All Saints’ church, Stuart by the Rev. E. R. O’Donnell and responses sung by the children of St. Marys school on Monday morning, September 16 at 9 o’clock.

Thomas Belford was born in County Fermanagh, Ireland April 5, 1879. When a young man he and a brother came to Canada to work. The brother returned to Ireland, during the First World War, and Tommy came down to Iowa where he was engaged in construction work.

He was employed by Hawkeye Cement Co. for many years and continued with Marquette Cement Co., when they purchased the plant and quarry.

Tommy has been a familiar sight around the Earlham streets for many years. W. W. Dunmire has probably worked with him longer than any one else.

He loved Earlham and the people but never forgot his Native Ireland.

His sight became so poor and his health in general that he decided to go to a nursing home.

The first of April, 1957 he entered the Horton Nursing home where he died September 13, 1957. He had suffered a stroke in August and spent some time in the hospital.

His only relatives are in Ireland but he leaves many friends in Earlham.

Casketbearers were: Ralph Sloan, Fred Petersen, J. W. Smith, Elias Gomez, Terry Byrne and D. A. Byrne. The Rosary was recited at 8:00 p.m. Sunday at the Leeper Funeral Home. Burial was in the Earlham cemetery.
