Earlham Library Obituary Collection
Earlham, IowaGustav Henry Jurgensen, son of Carl and Marie Jurgensen, was born on August 2, 1890 in Klein Brodersby, Schleswig, Germany, and departed this life at his home near DeSoto, Iowa on the evening of November 26, 1955. He brought his age to 65 years 3 months and 24 days.
He was baptized in early infancy in the faith of the Lutheran Church, and was also confirmed in this faith at the age of 16. He received his catechetical instruction together with other members of a large class but in order to board the ship on which he came to the U.S. he received the rite of confirmation alone. This faith, which he so boldly confessed alone before his large home church, he remained loyal to the rest of his life.
His immigration into this country took place in 1906. Though he was but 16 at the time, he made the journey by himself. He first made his residence at Bouton, Iowa. After that he lived successively in Minnesota, at Van Meter, and finally Dear DeSoto.
He was united in holy matrimony to Miss Laura A. Bernau on March 1, 1921. The ceremony was performed in Des Moines by the Rev. Geo. Vogal. To this union four children were born. The oldest, Wilhelmina Marie, died in infancy, Wanda Gattman resides at North Augusta, South Carolina; Nyle Jurgensen at Prole, Iowa, and Monna Mitchel at Ankeny, Iowa.
Note: Burial was made in the Trinity Lutheran cemetery.
