Former Resident Dies At Iowa City

Mrs. Ethel Sayre Kessler, 87, of Iowa City, died Thursday morning August 17 at a nursing home in Iowa City following a short illness.

Services were held Saturday, August 19, at 1:30 p.m. at the George L. Gay Funeral Home, with burial in the Oakland cemetery in Iowa City.

Mrs. Kessler was born to Dr. Samuel and Lura McLaughlin Sayre in St. Charles April 25, 1885. She was a graduate of Cedar Falls Junior College and received her degree from the University of Iowa in 1917. She was married in 1918 to Dr. James C. Kessler, who died in 1937. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Iowa City, the Iowa City Woman’s Club, Monday Club, Ekwall Club and The University Club.

Surviving are a son, James Roger Kessler of Prairie Village, Kan.; four grandchildren; and a sister, Mrs. Nydia McVay of Des Moines. Besides her husband, a daughter and two brothers preceded her in death.
