Death Of Joseph B. Kale

Resident of Winterset For More Than Half a Century

Joseph B. Kale, citizen of Winterset for more than half a century, died at his home here December 24th following a long siege of ill health. He was 84 years old.

Mr. Kale was the son of John and Eliza Thompson Kale, and was born near Tuscarawas, Ohio on May 15, 1851. At the age of three of three years he accompanied his parents to Madison county where the family settled at Elm Grove. In that community he spent his boyhood, moving to Winterset as a young man.

About 1872 he was married to Sara Josephine Wheeler. She died in 1893, leaving leaving five small children; Mary, who died as a child, Owen Kale, Mrs. Almond Gray of Forestburg, Mrs. N. T. Starr of Houston, Texas, Mrs. G. A. Lucus of Winterset, Mrs. Faith Bates of Bishop, California. A son, Virgil Kale had died in infancy.

In 1913 he married Mrs. Bessie Starnes.

As a young man Mr. Kale united with the Christian church here, and after its disorganization, he joined the Baptist church.

He spent 55 years in the home where he died.

In addition to the children, he is survived by 15 grandchildren, six great grandchildren, a half-brother, Elmer Allen of Winterset, and two sisters, Mrs. Emma Goodner of Kimball, Minnesota and Mrs. J. K. Sayres of Ensign, Kansas.

Funeral services were held from the Ramsey-Richards funeral home on December 27th with the Rev. W. C. Porter, former minister here. Burial was made in the Winterset cemetery.

JOSEPH KALE DIED – SERVICES FRIDAY

Lived in County Over Eighty Years. Resident of City Since 1880

Joseph Bradfield Kale, 84, well-known figure in Winterset, for over a half century, died Dec, 24 at his home in the southeast part of Winterset where he had lived fifty-five years. He had been in ill health for some time and had gradually failed.

He was but three years old when his parents, John and Eliza Thompson Kale, came to Madison county from near Tuscarawas, Ohio, where he was born March 15, 1851. They settled in the Elm Grove neighborhood, where he spent his boyhood with his nine brothers and sisters.

He was married in 1872 to Sarah Josephine Wheeler who died in February 1893, leaving him to father five small children. The youngest who was but three, he carried on his shoulder to his work, keeping the older ones in school. In 1913 he was married to Mrs. Bessie Starnes. He became a member of the Christian church and when it was discontinued here, joined the Baptist Church.

Mr. Kale was a kindly man, a laborer who was willing to work at whatever was offered. He did much butchering, cut wood, sprayed trees and years ago was employed at the Mardis brick yard helping make much of the brick which are now in the City Hall, the Baptist Church and in most of the older business buildings around the square.

Surviving are his children, Owen Kale who lived with his father, Mrs. Almond Gray, Forrestburg, Alberta; Mrs. N. L.Starr, Houston, Texas; Mrs. C. A. Lucas, Winterset; Mrs. Edith Bates, Bishop, California. Mary and Virgil are deceased. Others surviving are a half-brother, Elmer Allen, Winterset, and sisters, Mrs. Emma Goodnor, Kimball, Minnesota; and Mrs. J. K. Sayre, Ensign, Kansas; fifteen grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Services were held Friday afternoon at 2:30 at the Ramsey-Richards funeral home conducted by the Rev. W. C. Porter, pastor of the first United Presbyterian church of Waterloo, former pastor of United Presbyterian church in Winterset. Burial was in the Winterset cemetery.
