Wednesday, April 14, 1971RAY E. THORNBURG Takes Own Life
Ray E. Thornburg of near Winterset took his life Saturday at his farm home in Union township. He was 53 years of age.
Mr. Thornburg was a native of Adel, where he was born Nov. 11, 1917, a son of Ray H. and Aletha Welch Thornburg. He had lived in Madison county the last 13 years and was employed at the Penn-Dixie quarry here for the last 14 years.
Mr. Thornburg was a veteran of World War II, and a member of the American Legion. He was affiliated with the Methodist church.
He was married Oct. 25, 1937 to Betty H. Schirner, who survives him.
In addition to his wife, he leaves six children, Mrs. Norma Cooper of Des Moines, Mrs. Donald Faux of Patterson, David R. Thornburg of Winterset, Mrs. Bud McDowell of Des Moines, Mrs. Jerry Snedden of California, and Mrs. Tom Tyer of Cedar Rapids. He also leaves his father, Ray H. Thornburg of Des Moines; his mother, Mrs. Aletha Brown of DesMoines; 14 grandchildren; and 11 brothers and sisters: George Moss, Cecil, Merle and Wayne Thornburg of Des Moines, Roy Thornburg of Patterson, Lester and Dean Thornburg of New Virginia, and Maxine Rider, Mrs. Willis Faux, Mrs. Al Bloodgood and Mrs. John Hitchcock, all of Des Moines.
Funeral services were held this Wednesday at 10 a.m. From Collins Funeral home in Winterset, conducted by the Rev. Charles Updike, pastor of the Winterset Foursquare church. Burial was made in the Winterset cemetery, with military honors by Green-Rogers post of the American Legion..
