Two Highway Fatalities in Same Day Here Last Week

Two fatal automobile accidents within the same day last week jumped the number of highway fatalities in Madison County during 1975 to three.

The first of those mishaps took the life of Randy Eugene Garrison, 17, of Winterset. Garrison died following a two-car crash on the Tileville curve of Highway 92, about four miles east of Winterset. That accident occurred at about 12:15 a.m. last Wednesday morning, March 19.

Iowa Highway Patrol Trooper Richard McCormick of Winterset said Garrison was driving a westbound auto when he collided nearly head-on with an eastbound car driven by William Johnston, 47, of Patterson. There was dense fog at the time of the accident.

Johnston was taken to Madison County Memorial Hospital in Winterset, where he was treated for facial cuts and minor abrasions. He was released the following afternoon.

A passenger in the Garrison auto, 19-year-old Richard James Crawford of Winterset was treated for minor bruises and released from Madison County Memorial Hospital.

Funeral services for Randy Eugene Garrison were held at the Collins Funeral Home in Winterset last Friday, March 21, at 10:00 a.m., with the Rev. Eldon Jandebeur officiating. Burial was in the Penn Center cemetery.

Randy E. Garrison was born at Winterset on May 21, 1957, the son of John C. and Edna Sirdoreus Garrison. A lifetime resident of Madison County, he was employed as an apprentice brick layer.

Survivors include his mother and father; a sister, Dorothy Garrison, at home; and two brothers, Paul Dean Garrison of Denver, Colo., and Charles H. Garrison of Winterset.
