MARY A. WHITE

Mary A. Payton was born in Union county, Indiana, May 2nd, 1841, and passed to her reward March 16th, 1926, at 4 p.m., her age being 84 years, 10 months, and 14 days. Her childhood was spent in and near Ronoak, Indiana. At the age of 11 years she came with her family to Dallas county, Iowa. She often mentioned the coincidence that there were just as many log cabins in Ft. Des Moines as she was old at that time.

The family spent their first winter in the forks of the Racoon river where the father kept the larder supplied with venison and wild turkey. In the spring of 1883 they moved out on the open prairie in the place now owned by Clifford Lienemann and at once made a home which was always open to the wayside traveler and also to the church society which was organized and services held in their place until the Blue Ridge church was built. In these home services, she began her Christian life, which she maintained to the end. She changed her church relation from Blue Ridge to Fairview and then to Van Meter.

At the age of 19, she was united in marriage to William M. Fisher, who died in service during the Civil war. To this union were born three children, two dying in infancy and early childhood. In 1866, she was united in marriage to Michael E. White. To this union were born three children, one, Katy Ethland, dying in her 18th year. Mother White lived 38 years in the Fairview neighborhood where she took a lively interest in all social and religious activities of the community. She was always ready to minister to the sick and suffering, but always above these outside activities, her one thought was for her family and home.

She leaves to mourn her passing, two brothers, J. W. and B. F. Payton of California; three sons, L. W. Fisher of Van Meter, H. E. White of Belle Plain, Kansas, and O. V. White of Van Meter; five grandchildren, and three great grandchildren.

Transcriber's note: Burial in the Fairview Cemetery.
