Page 1WINTER MACKAY Died Tuesday
Mrs. Winter Mackay, well known Madison county farm home economist and teacher, died unexpectedly Tuesday night at her home in Winterset. She was 65 years of age. Death was attributed to a heart condition.
Funeral services for Mrs. Mackay will be held this Friday afternoon, July 3, at 2 p.m., from the Winterset Methodist church.
Winter, as she was familiarly known, retired in June of 1961 after a long period of service as Madison county extension home economist.
The daughter of Pearl and Eugene Wilson, she was born on a farm near Macksburg on Oct. 20, 1898. She attended elementary school at Macksburg and Winterset. A graduate of Iowa State University at Ames, she first entered the field of vocational home making as a teacher at Winterset High School for the 1922-23 school year. After that she taught at Macksburg, Bondurant and Martensdale, for a total of nine years.
In 1935 she became associated with the U.S.D.A. as an economist with the old Farm Security administration, with headquarters at Chariton. She came to Winterset with that agency in 1940 and continued in the capacity here until her appointment with the Extension Service in 1944.
Mrs. Mackay served as extension home economist 18 years, the longest tenure in the history of that office in Madison county. It was during this period that the 4-H program reached a peak in enrollment and community participation.
Mrs. Mackay is survived by her husband, Darrell; twin daughters, Mrs. Robert Whicker of Ottumwa, Iowa, and Mrs. Wallace Erickson of Minneapolis, Minn.; four grandchildren; and a brother, Wyman Wilson of Richmond, Va.
Officiating at the service this Friday afternoon will be Rev. John C. Porath, pastor of the First Methodist church. Burial will be in the Winterset cemetery.
