Death of Mrs. Anna M. Kirby

Mrs. Anna M. Kirby, a well known resident of Winterset and Madison county, died Saturday, April 20th, in Marshalltown, at the home of her son, James J. Kirby. Mrs. Kirby had been in poor health for some time, but her condition was not thought to be serious. On Saturday, April 6th, she went with her son, and his wife, to their home in Marshalltown, where she expected to make an extended visit. She had had one slight heart attack, but had recovered, and on the day previous to her death had been downtown. Saturday morning she had dressed and was sitting in a chair. A sudden heart attack brought about her death.

Mrs. Kirby was a daughter of Patrick and Elizabeth Nolan. She was born July 26, 1853, in Philadelphia, but came to Iowa with her parents, when she was a small child. They lived in Iowa City for a couple of years and then came to Madison county, and located on a farm near Patterson. In March, ---- she was married at St. Ambrose cathedral in Des Moines, to William H. Kirby. They went to housekeeping on a farm a mile north of Patterson, where they continued to reside until the death of Mr. Kirby on January 16, 1911. Since that time, Mrs. Kirby had made her home in Winterset, on Fourth street.

The deceased is survived by one son, James J. Kirby, and his wife, of Marshalltown. She also leaves two brothers and two sisters: Joseph Nolan, of Lane, Kansas; John Nolan, Mrs. James McNamara and Mrs. Elizabeth Sprague, of Union township.

Requiem high mass was held for Mrs. Kirby at St. Mary’s Catholic church in Marshalltown, Monday morning, April 22, at 8 o’clock. Requiem high mass was also celebrated in Winterset, at St. Joseph’s church, at the same time, for the deceased. The funeral party was met at Martensdale, at 12:30 o’clock, and short services were held at St. Patrick’s church, Monday afternoon. She was buried in the cemetery there, beside her husband and other near relatives. Five nephews, Martin, James, Joseph and Frank McNamara and Phillip Nolan, and John Cunningham acted as pall bearers.
