Winterset Madisonian – December 27, 1928
Pg 4

Mary A. Kopp, daughter of Ernest and Alwilda Kopp, was born near Winterset, Madison county, Iowa, on April 12, 1868, and following an operation that was every hope of better health than she had known for years, she passed peacefully away into the life eternal, in the midst of the quiet of God’s hold day, December 16, 1928, in the Methodist hospital at Des Moines at the age of 60 years, 8 months and 4 days.

On March 26, 1889, she was united in marriage to J. O. McCleary, at Winterset. Into the happy family circle thus formed came these children, Millard O. McCleary of Earlham; Vernon F. McCleary, of Adel; Curtis of Dexter at home with his father; Stella, who passed away June 13, 1916, at the age of 19 years; Ernest, who died at the age of 12 months, and an infant son, who died at birth. Two grandchildren, Lenore and LaVere, children of M. O. McCleary will cherish the memory of their grandmother as one of their choicest friends. She leaves beside her immediate family circle, an only brother, C. A. Kopp, of Eagle Bend, Minnesota, and two sisters, Mrs. Eudora Taylor, of Glencross, South Dakota, and Mrs. H. Montgomery, of Adel, together with many other relatives dear to her and a multitude who claims her as a dearly loved friend.

She confessed her faith in Christ and united with the United Brethren church on February 5, 1910, and through the years found joy in giving her life in loving service for him and his kingdom. No testimony of ours today in this brief life sketch can add to the real worth of the beautiful quiet life of Mrs. McCleary. The virtues of her character were many. She possessed a disposition of friendliness and interest in the welfare of all. The best things in life were her children, her home and delighted to have her friends and loved ones associated with her there. Those who have enjoyed the high privilege of friendship with Mary McCleary, through the experiences of a life time have found her loyalty unquestionable, and have rested in the shelter of her sympathy and understanding.

Transcriber’s note: Typed as printed in the Madisonian. Different spellings of McCleeary are throughout the obituary. Burial was made in the Jefferson-Goar cemetery.
