Obituaries – Charles P. Benson

Charles P. Benson, son of Benge and Hannah Henssons, was born in Holladas, Sweden, July 24, 1871 and died in Des Moines, March 27, where he had been ill for the last month. He suffered a nervous breakdown in 1932 and had been in ill health since.

When a small boy, he came to this country with a cousin, Hannah Larson. He was employed by the John Morrell Packing Company of Ottumwa, for 17 years. On Jan. 1, 1908, he was united in marriage to Ethel Bricker and to this union were born two daughters, Marie Benson Fagen and Eleanor Benson.

In 1912 he left the employ of John Morrell and moved from Joplin, Mo., to Earlham where he went into business with C. D. Bricker. After Mr. Bricker’s death, Mr. Benson sold his interest in the store George E. Bricker and entered the furniture and undertaking business with Ernest Walters.

In 1918 Mr. Walter sold his interest and S. C. Welch became his partner. This partnership continued until 1932 when, due to ill health, he sold his share to Mr. Welch and retired.

He leaves to mourn his wife, Ethel Benson, two daughters, Marie Benson Fagen and Eleanor Benson, one son-in-law, Harold Fagen, two sisters, three brothers, several nieces and nephews and friends.
