MELISSA ANN SHOEMAKER

Melissa Ann Shoemaker, daughter of John C. and Mary Shoemaker, was born in Schuyler county, Illinois, September 1st, 1860. When 19 years old she moved with her parents to Madison county, Iowa, where she has since made her home.

She never married and for almost 40 years she gave herself in caring for an invalid mother. After her mother's death she continued to care for others. She helped in many different homes in the county. She was for several years housekeeper for Tom Scott, helping care of his son, Earl, when he was a baby. Later she kept house for J. E. Smith and others. At one time she went to Mexico to care for a niece and her baby, then later she was called to Montana to help in the home of her nephew.

She has been for thirty-eight years a faithful member of the Methodist Episcopal church of Winterset and spent many of those years in Christ-like service for others. She was a member of the Winterset W. C. T. U. and was interested in their work for the temperance cause.

She passed away in the home of her nephew, Glen Shoemaker, near Winterset on February 11, 1926, aged 65 years, 1 month and 11 days. She leaves one brother, George Shoemaker and 10 nephews and nieces and many friends, who will long cherish the memory of unselfish service for others.

The funeral services were held at the Tidrick funeral home, Saturday, February 13th at 10:30, conducted by the Rev. D. J. Shenton, pastor of the Methodist Episcopal church.
