Page 1ARCH HOLMES, Ohio Pioneer Is Called
After an active life in Madison county, both as a farmer and in political matters, Arch Holmes died at his home in Truro on Saturday, June 30th, aged 84 years.
Mr. Holmes was one of the last of the Holmes county pioneers, Reuben Foster and Moses Canfield still remaining of the group which located here at the same time. Residing here since 1856, Mr. Holmes, by nature a man of energy and ability, made himself a factor in his community. His war record shows service in Co. F of the 39th Iowa, and he is the fourth Civil War veteran to pass away within a week, James Kale, William Crow and James V. Kirk being the other three.
Mr. Holmes had been in failing health for several years, and has made his home with his son, Isaac E. Holmes of Truro. J. W. Holmes, known as “Ducky” Holmes in the baseball world, is a son, coming from his duties as manager of the Lincoln hall team to attend the funeral, which occurred Monday morning. Other children surviving are: Mrs. Richard Lyons, living in Ohio township, and Horace H. Holmes of Des Moines.
