GEORGE RILEY HAYS

George Riley Hays was born near Decatur, Macon County, Illinois, Oct. 21, 1859, just prior to the throes of a great civil war. He grew up filled with a spirit of sympathy that made it easy for him to come in close touch with all men. He came to Madison county in the fall of 1865 with his parents and grew to manhood at a day when the broad, fertile prairies of this county lay largely unfenced and unimproved. He knew them and the woods and loved nature as he also loved humanity.

He married Miss Mary Whitenack on Dec. 21. 1901. He moved to Earlham in December, 1905. Providence may have laid the lives for some of us in more ambitious fields of labor, in education in finances, in church or state but seldom has one accepted the conditions of life more complacently and done his “bit” more cheerfully. He was your friend and mine, he lived, he worked, he suffered uncomplainingly and in the due course of time he has passed on to a better and a brighter world to renew old friendships and enjoy the rewards of a life well spent.

He died at noon on June 28, 1917. He is survived by his wife, two brothers, Thos. Hays of Joliet, Mont., and C. W. Hays; a number of nieces and nephews and a host of friends. Short funeral services were held at the M. E. church in Earlham and at Worthington, conducted by Rev. H. T. Clampitt of Monteith and Rev. Watson of Earlham. The remains were laid to rest in the Worthington cemetery.

Those attending from a distance were; Mrs. Anna Myers and son, Leslie of Storm Lake; Mrs. Ella Whitienack, Waterloo; Mr and Mrs. Ray Whitenack, Sac City; Mr and Mrs. E. L. Brown and Gladys of Des Moines, Mr. and Mrs. W. E. Brown and Mr. and Mrs. Ed Davis of Waukee; Mr and Mrs. Roy Brown, Booneville; Mr. and Mrs. Carl Brown and Mary, Van Meter; Mr. and Mrs. Ward McDaniel and Reuben, Mr. and Mrs. S. A. Hays, Mr. and Mrs. Harry Hays, Mr. and Mrs. J. F. Hays, Mr. and Mrs. C. R. Peters and Carlton and Carrie McDaniel of Winterset; Mrs. H. T. Clampitt of Monteith.
