MRS. MARY EVANS

Mrs. Mary Evans, daughter of James and Nancy Henderson, was born near Castine, Darke county, Ohio, Aug. 10, 1840 and died at her home in Douglas township, Madison county, Iowa, May 13, 1917, aged 76 years, 8 months and 3 days.

With her parents, at the age of twelve, she moved from the place of her birth to Marion county, Indiana, locating near the city of Indianapolis. In 1853, as a pioneer into a new country, she came with her parents by wagon to Madison county. On Nov. 7, 1858, she as united in marriage to Asa W. Evans, locating on the Douglas township farm, which has ever since been her home. To this union six children were born, two dying in infancy. The surviving children are: Mrs. Tina Whetstone and Mrs. Ella Klingman, both of this county, and Lee and James, residing at home. All were constantly with the mother during her last illness. The husband and father died Nov. 29, 1876.

Mr. Evans will be remembered by many of the older citizens as a prominent horseman; also deputy sheriff of Madison county during the early pioneer days.. Her father's family consisted of eleven children, four of whom survive her: Mrs. Anna Danley of Ithaca, Nebr.; Eli Henderson of Denver, Colo.; James Henderson of Greenbush, Mont., and Joseph Henderson of Des Moines, Iowa; the latter being present at the funeral. Besides these, there are a host of nieces and nephews, also two grandchildren, Mrs. Marie Klingman Peterson, John Evans Klingman and two great grandchildren, Galyn and Merle Peterson.

Mrs. Evans was a member of the Church of Christ, and remained steadfast in her faith to the end. She was a woman of generous impulses and sincere and constant in her friendship. She was a most devoted and loving mother and no sacrifice was too great for those she loved and served. Mrs. Evans had been in poor health for many years, and at times was a great sufferer. Her patience in her last sickness was most remarkable. The end came gradually and peacefully, as one who wraps her draperies about her and lies down to sleep, and the spirit returned to the Master who gave it.

The funeral was held from the home Wednesday at 2 p.m., conducted by Rev. B. B. Burton of Winterset and Rev. L. E. Follansbee of Des Moines, with interment in the Winterset cemetery. The services were concluded at the grave under the auspices of the Rebekah lodge.
