Dexter, Iowa

Fletcher Marston was born in Henderson Co., Ill., December 31st, 1841 and died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Lloyd Speer six miles south of Dexter, Feb. 17th, 1919, aged 77 years, 1 month and 17 days.

He was the fourth in a family of ten children—three sisters and one brother remain.

In the spring of 1864 he enlisted as a volunteer in the civil war being a member of Company C. Regiment 83, Illinois Volunteers. He was honorably discharged and mustered out of service in Oct. 1865 on account of a bullet wound in the knee, which rendered him lame the remainder of his life. He was a member of Wadsworth Post No. 36, Dexter, Iowa.

He was married to Martha McLain, Feb. 8th, 1871. To this union were born 9 children, of whom two daughters and four sons remain to mourn the loss of a kind and indulgent father. Twenty-five grandchildren and one great grandchild also survive.

He came to Iowa in 1869 and settled on a farm south of Dexter, where he lived until the spring of 1899 when he moved to Dexter.

Mrs. Marston died Feb. 6th, 1912.

Fletcher Marston was highly esteemed and recognized as one of our most prosperous citizens. He possessed a happy and cheerful nature which won him many friends. About 40 years ago he was converted and united with the Methodist Episcopal church and remained a faithful member to the end. At the time of his death he was a member of the Board of Trustees of the church here in Dexter.

During his late illness, extending many months, though in great bodily suffering—he was patient and uncomplaining. The end came without a struggle.

Funeral services were held in the Methodist church in Dexter, Wednesday afternoon in charge of Rev. E. E. Ilgenfritz.

Interment was in the Dexter cemetery. The sympathy of a host of friends is extended to the bereaved family.
