Dexter Library Obituary Collection
Dexter, Iowa

Mattie W. Brown was born in Putnam County, Indiana, November 20, 1858. When 19 years of age she came with her parents, to Madison County, Iowa, north of Winterset, where, for a number of years she taught in the rural schools.

On February 22, 1881, she was united in marriage to J. W. Lenocker—and they began their long companionship together on a farm two miles south of Penn Center, Iowa. About six years later they moved to Dexter, Iowa, which was their home for over 20 years. The latter years they have spent in Des Moines, Iowa.

Mrs. Lenocker was converted at an early age and united with the Methodist Church in Indiana.

Our departed friend passed away, August 25, 1933, at the Iowa Lutheran Hospital, Des Moines, where she had been critically ill following a stroke some three months ago. She had attained the age of 74 years, 9 months, and 5 days.

She leaves to mourn her passing, her husband, one daughter, Mrs. A. W. Howell of Volga, S.D.; two sons, W. P. and J. E. Lenocker of Los Angeles, Calif.; two brothers, E. M. Brown of Los Angeles, and R. W. Brown of Boone, Iowa; five grandsons, Wayne and Dale Howell of Volga, S.D., Dale, Donald and Paul Jr. Lenocker of Los Angeles, and a wide host of friends. Of the children, Mrs. Howell and W. P. Lenocker have been with their mother throughout her illness and death, the other son being unable to be present.

Characteristic of our friend’s life was her sacrificing spirit, and thoughtfulness for the needs and wants of others. Her choice of text and songs for this service—as well as her great desire for prayer, not least of all during the days of her illness, indicate her interest in those Things beyond the bounds of time.

In her departure, a faithful life’s companion, a loving mother, and a true relative and friend has been parted from us.

Note: Burial was made in the Penn Center cemetery.
