Dexter, IowaSophia Maudella Firkins Watts was born to Bert and Kate Firkins on March 4, 1878 in the home now occupied by Mr. and Mrs. Woodrow Cly. She was the last of seven children and one of the three who grew to maturity.
Her entire life was spent in the Dexter community with the exception of a few years in the Fairview neighborhood south of Stuart. She received her education in the schools of Laurel Hill and College Corners as well as the old Dexter Normal School. Sophia was a long time member of the First Presbyterian Church and a member of the Rebekah Lodge for 72 years.
On October 20, 1926 she was united in marriage to John Owen Watts who preceded her in death October 5, 1936.
Sophia was a lover of nature and was always willing to assist someone in need including her friends, her church, her lodge and club.
She passed away Monday morning, July 15, 1968 at the Garwood Rest home at the age of 90 years. Thirteen nieces and nephews survive, including Woodrow Cly of Dexter.
Services were held Wednesday afternoon, July 17 in the Presbyterian Church with interment at the Penn Center cemetery.
