William Beard, son of Margaret and Christopher Beard, was born in Clayton county, Indiana, June 15, 1839 and died in Winterset, Iowa, Dec. 13, 1922, aged 83 years, 5 months and 28 days.
His father died when he was six years old and his mother died three years later, leaving him an orphan at the age of nine years. He lived with friends and neighbors for a short time but began doing a man's work on a farm at a very early age. When 16 years old, he made a trip across the plains, going as far west as Salt Lake City. In a little over a year he came back to Iowa, then went to Trenton, Mo., to make his home with an older sister.
When he was 20 years of age he was married too Frances Stephenson, who lived only four months after the marriage. In 1859 he was married to Matilda Lancaster and they moved to Chickasaw county, Iowa. They came to Madison county in 1872, living in and near Winterset. His wife died in 1878 and the next year he married Eliza Miller. He was then living on the home place in Webster township, where he made his home until about three years ago, when he moved to Winterset.
To this marriage nine children were born: Bertha, who died at the age of 21, and Anna, later at the age of 15. Those remaining are: John, who lives on the home place in Webster township; Mrs. Minnie Bailey and Will Beard of Truro; Mrs. Pearl Keith of Marathon; Mrs. Ruth Pace of Middle River and Frank and Clyde in the home.
He was a member of the Modern Woodmen for many years. He united with the Oak Grove Evangelical church a number of years ago, and later attended at Maple Grove. He renewed his faith in his Savior in the last few weeks of life and was anxious that his family all meet him in the better land. He leaves to hold him in cherished memory, his wife, seven children, 13 grandchildren and many old neighbors and friends.
Funeral services were conducted on Friday afternoon at the Church of Christ, by E. B. Chancellor. Burial was made in the Winterset cemetery.
