Herbert Renwick Spencer, son of James Harvey and Ideletta M. Spencer was born October 14, 1898, in Cedarville, Green county, Ohio. He died March 3, 1973 at the Dexter Hospital at the age of 74 years. He was preceded in death by his parents, five brothers, Frank, Lloyd, Miron, William and Howard; a sister, Lois Mills; and a daughter, Esther Edwards.

January 3, 1923, Herbert was married to Lois Esther Henkle. They had two daughters and one son.

Herb attended Madison County elementary schools and Earlham High School and farmed 47 years in the Winterset, Earlham and Adel communities. He was a member of the Adel United Methodist church.

Surviving are his wife, Lois of Dexter; and two children, Wilma Sutherland of Colorado Springs, Colorado and Wendell of Topeka, Kansas; brothers, Dr. James of Woodward and Thomas of Oak Grove, Missouri; sisters, Mary Beeson of Earlham and Dorothy Stotts of Wichita, Kansas and 10 grandchildren and one great grandson.

Active casket bearers were Ira Piercy, Pearl Wiley, Charles Walston, Elmer Coffman, Barney Crawford and Marion Compton. Honorary bearers were August Burton, Glenn Short, Lowell Dawes, Otis Dymond, Fred Morford and Charles Mishler.
