Pg 7Francis Asbury, son of Robert and Priscilla Davis Clopton, was born in Gentry county, Missouri August 21, 1852.
His father was an ardent abolitionist, and because of political disturbances decided to move to the new state of Iowa. The family first settled at Avon, coming to Winterset in the spring of 1862. Here the father enlisted as a defender of the Union, in Company A, 39th Iowa infantry. He never returned, dying at Cairo, Illinois, in 1863. Upon the shoulder of the thirteen year old lad, Asbury felt the duty of providing the support of his widowed mother and his brothers and sister. This was a hard task during the trying days of the Civil war, but he never faltered in his duty.
On November 13, 1875, he was united in marriage with Mary Wells. To them were born seven children, Mrs. Wilda Jacobs, Harry, who died in infancy; Mrs. Daisy Barrus, who passed away in 1909; Mrs. Cora Van Hosen; Tom and Charles Clopton, all of Des Moines, and Miss Mardie Clopton of Woodward. A grandson, Paul Barrus, has made his home with Mr. and Mrs. Clopton since his mother’s death.
Asbury Clopton lived in Winterset from 1862 to 1926, a period of sixty-four years. A year ago, he and his wife moved to Des Moines, to be near their children. There he peacefully passed away on the morning of October 8, 1927, aged 75 years, 1 month and 17 days.
Before his health failed Mr. Clopton was a familiar figure in Winterset, where his sociable and kindly disposition won him countless friends. During the last eight years of his life he suffered greatly and was untiringly cared for by his wife, children and brother, Thomas Clopton. Besides these he is survived by twelve grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at the Tidrick funeral home in Winterset, on Monday, October 10, and his body was laid to rest in the family lot in the Winterset cemetery. Rev. A. P. Keast, of the Methodist church, conducted the services.
