Death of Fred Mapes

Fred Mapes, aged 57, died at his home in the northeast part of Winterset on Tuesday afternoon after a short illness with what is known as intestinal flu. Funeral services were held on Thursday afternoon at the Tidrick funeral home and burial made in the Roberts cemetery near Webster. Mr. Mapes is survived by his wife and six children, Mrs. Robert Sherwood, Mrs. Charles Thomas, Texas, Mrs. Lee Watkins, Oklahoma; Lula, at home and Floyd and Dick Mapes. One brother remains, H. G. Mapes, of Winterset; two sisters, Mrs. Ben Harrison, Orient, and Mrs. James Garrett, Hansell, Iowa.

Frederick O. Mapes, son of Erastus and Alida Mapes, was born in Madison county, Iowa, December 4, 1869, and departed this life at his home in Winterset September 13, 1927. He was united in marriage to Martha F. Garrett July 5, 1892. To this union eight children were born: Mrs. R. R. Sherwood, of Winterset; Mrs. C. A. Thomas, of Amarillo, Texas; Mrs. G. L. Watkins, of Supply, Oklahoma; Lula, at home, and Floyd and Dick, of Winterset; two daughters, Gladys and Jessie, having preceded him in death.

His home was on a farm in Madison county until some years after his marriage when he moved to Oklahoma, remaining there thirteen years, then moving back to a farm in Madison county, after which they made their home near Webster until they moved to Winterset six years ago, where they have since made their home.

He was a kind and loving husband and father and will be missed by his relatives and friends. Those left to mourn besides his family are his sisters, Mrs. C. B. Harrison, of Orient, Iowa, and Mrs. Ola Garrett, of Hansell, Iowa, and one brother, Harvey, of Winterset, twelve grandchildren, nieces and nephews and a host of friends.

Rev. Paul Fowler held the funeral service at the Tidrick funeral home, Thursday afternoon, September 15, and the burial was in the Roberts cemetery.
