William Hartman, son of Sally Ann and Zebblen Hartman, was born at Burlington, Iowa, October 3rd, 1850, and departed this life June 16th, 1927, at the home of his son, Frank L. Hartman, at Creston, Iowa, at the age of 76 years, 8 months and 13 days.

He came with his mother to Madison county at the age of one year. His mother died when he was but fifteen years of age. He made his home with his grandparents, Mary and Jonathon Bishop, in Scott township, where he grew to manhood.

Mr. Hartman was united in marriage to Laura J. Smith, June 13th, 1872. To this union were born nine children. He spent practically all of his life in Madison county with the exception of eighteen years which he lived in Creston. He has been failing in health for the past two years. The past month he has been a patient sufferer until the end. He was always glad to see his friends and meet them with his outstretched hand and a smile. He was always a kind and loving father.

He leaves to mourn his loss, six sons and one daughter, James T., Frank L., and William W. of Creston, George of Ellston, John of Macksburg, Walter of Pacific Junction, and Mrs. Walter Gray of Patterson.

His wife preceded him in death June 24th, 1904, his daughter, Blanche in 1897, and his son Joseph in 1918.

He also leaves twenty eight grandchildren, and five great grandchildren, besides a host of friends and relatives.

Note: Burial was made in the Winterset cemetery.
