Death of J. L. Leddlie

Earlham, Ia., Special, June 15 —

J. L. Leddlie, a pioneer of Earlham, died Monday morning about seven o’clock at his home. Mr. Leddlie was eighty years of age, and was born at Newry, Armangh county, Ireland. He came to this country in 1870, and has been a resident of Earlham since then.

The deceased is survived by his widow and two sons Will of North Brook, Illinois, and Chester, who moved here the past year from New Mexico to be with his parents.

Funeral services were held at the Presbyterian church of which he was a charter member. Interment was made in the Earlham cemetery.

Joseph Lyle Ledlie, son of William and Annabel Lochart Ledlie, was born near Newry, Ireland, in County Armaugh, March 15, 1847. He departed this life at his home in Earlham June 6, 1927, aged 80 years, 2 months, 21 days.

He grew to manhood in his native country. He served as an apprentice in a grocery store for four years. Then he engaged in the grocery business for five years, coming to this country in 1870. He settled with his brother near Carlisle, Iowa, later moving to Earlham where he since has resided.

He was united in marriage to Nancy J. King of Adel April 7, 1881. To this union were born four children, two boys and two girls. Two children preceded him in death.

He is survived by his widow and two sons William L., of Northbrook, Ill., and Chester K. formerly of New Mexico but who has been helping care for his father the past year. Two granddaughters and one grandson also survive him.

A brother, Thos. Ledlie, of Carlisle, and a sister Mrs. E. L. Copeland, of Arkansas City, Kansas, preceded him in death during the past year. His loss is mourned by several nephews and nieces besides other relatives and friends.

Mr. Ledlie was a charter member of the Presbyterian Church of Earlham, organized in 1870, and he has always been a faithful member. He was a kind and loving father and his place in the home and in the hearts of his family can never be filled.

Funeral services were held at the Presbyterian Church Wednesday afternoon at two o’clock, conducted by Rev. Bock. Pall bearers were old friends and fellow-churchmen, Harry Foster, N. A. Packard, J. P. Price, F. Bilderback, Clem Godby and Milo Brown. Interment was in Earlham cemetery.
