Death of Hubert L. Croft

Hubert L. Croft, son of Mr. and Mrs. George Croft, died early Sunday morning, June 12th, at St. Joseph’s Sanitorium, in Albuquerque, New Mexico, after a long illness. He was thirty years of age. Mr. Croft spent most of his life in Winterset, and attended the local schools. He worked for several years as a drug clerk, until after the war when he found the work too confining, and since then has been associated with his father in the Furniture shop work. Only recently they opened a down town shop.

Hubert, as he was familiarly known, served 5 years and 6 months with the Iowa National Guards, and during that period served on the Mexican border. When the World war was declared he enlisted with the 3rd Dv, regular army ambulance Co. No. 7, serving one year overseas, most of the time being at the front. Among the major engagements, he saw service in the battle of The Marne, Argonne, St. Mihiel, and Mense Argonne. He was with the Army of occupation in Germany, and was sent home on a hospital ship. While he received no wounds in service, he was gassed, and this was the cause of the disease that brought about his death.

He was married November 16th, 1919, to Miss Mayme Mullen of Cromwell, who with three children, Betty Jane, Doris Mae, and Eugene Lewis, survive him. He is also survived by his father and mother, two sisters, Miss Nona of Winterset, and Mrs. Frank Jones of Des Moines, and four brother, Russell of Winterset, Raymond of Miami, Florida, George A. of Creston, and Frank, who is attending the U.S. Naval Academy.

Funeral services were conducted at the Croft home on Filmore street, Wednesday, June 15th, at 2:30 o’clock by Rev. F. Clare McCallon, and burial was made in the Winterset cemetery.
